MisS joins StarTale – Prettying Up the Starcraft 2 Pro Scene

While women are in pretty much every area of life in American life, we still don't see that much integration of gender in many of the Eastern cultures. Perhaps we will see a change in that as time goes on... and perhaps this is a precursor to that sort of assimilation... but right now, we're happy to see another girl signed to a Starcraft 2 Pro team, especially one as strong as StarTale.

MisS joins Startale's already impressive roster...

Han "MisS" Yi Ying was a professional Warcraft 3 player for several years, before moving away from the pro scene to join a TV network as a commentator. Her dream was to continue pursuing the chance to play for a pro gaming team, however, so when StarTale offered here a spot on their roster, she quit her commentating job and joined them quickly.

It turns out that StarTale.RainBOw went to a girl's only tournament in Korea (Zowie Davina) to test her in person. After the test, StarTale gave her an option to join them, and she confirmed... becoming the second girl on StarTale's team today (February 13, 2012). The other girl on the team, StarTale.Aphrodite (RainBOw's girlfriend), will no longer be the only female on the team, apparently.

Now there's two points of interest that stand out about this 'acquisition' and of course, we'll mention them both:

1) MisS is not Korean: This is a point of interest because it is the first time that a Korean team has recruited a non-national female. Widening their focus to people outside of Korea's crazy hardcore attitude, StarTale will hopefully be able to further spearhead an effort to not be so inward looking when picking up new talent for their team. There are good players outside of Korea!

2) MisS is female: Of course, this one is pretty obvious from the picture of her above, however it is definitely still very important. At this point, the Starcraft 2 pro scene is definitely dominated by the other gender, with all of the big winners being male. Is this because females haven't been given the opportunity to show themselves at these sorts of events? Perhaps, perhaps not. The question is... did StarTale sign her for her face and commentating skills (remember she has been working for a couple years as a TV commentator) or for her Starcraft 2 skills? That is something that only time will tell as we see where she fits into the team's dynamic.

StarTale is a very strong Korean team, with names like Bomber (winner MLG 2011), July (2nd place Code S GSL 2011), and Curious (1st place Code A GSL 2011). They also have Brood War legend FruitDealer who is considered one of the most interesting players to watch due to his crazy, varied, risky playstyle. Have they just added to their star-studded roster another top player? Hopefully we'll see some more of her and be able to decide for ourselves.

If anyone knows where her stream is or if she has one, please post in the comments!

  1. TeamLiquid forums have a translation of StarTale’s announcement of this acquisition right here – http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=311479 . Check it out for even more official type information! Still lots of speculation about where she’s headed professionally!

  2. “While women are in pretty much every area of life in American life…” starting the post with that makes me wonder if you mean in gaming too or just in general.

  3. I was actually meaning in general, since you don’t see them prominently in gaming (pro gaming, that is) often. Hmm… I suppose that wasn’t entirely clear, was it?! ;) Thanks for the comment!
