5 Games in 5 Minutes: Episode 1 – Day of Infamy, 8-Bit Invaders, DeSync, We Need to Go Deeper, Space Hulk Deathwing

5 Games in 5 Minutes does exactly what it says on the tin. We have a number of games which we are either too busy or are simply not worth playing fully. With these games it is difficult to provide a full and accurate review. So, instead, we briefly play the game (enough to garner a decent first impression) and then quickly give you the run-down in one minute. It is designed to give you a quick impressions of a few smaller games to see whether or not it will pique your fancy.

Dishonored 2 review – Blink and you miss it

It doesn’t bother me… I swear! I’ve aged, I’ve grown, I’ve matured. I am both wiser and more benevolent for my years, more accepting of the way others do things even if I’d have done it differently. Except none of this is true, and GODAMMIT BETHESDA, how hard would it have been to release a version of the game with the PROPER GODAMN SPELLING OF “DISHONOURED”?! Okay… Seriously now. Serious game review. Yes.

Vermintide review – Ahm not a raaaaat!

Have you and your friends ever done that thing? Y’know, it’s later in the evening when someone says “man I kind of want to play some co-op games!” Then there’s the inevitable struggle to find something everybody enjoys and, more importantly, owns. Invariably, in these situations one ends up browsing Steam and the web for lists of the “best multiplayer games” so that you can avoid playing hours of Garry’s Mod (which, let’s be fair, tends to only be amusing in short stints). Every single one of these lists almost always makes some mention of Left 4 Dead and how it is a quintessential multiplayer and co-op experience (both local and remote). So it has always confused me how it seems nobody has really quite captured the same feeling of the games. Well, look no further friends, because Warhammer *hurrrk* The End Times *hurrrk* Vermintide does actually more than just come close. Aside from the silliness of having two subtitles (when really just “Vermintide” suffices) the game does so much right that I feel the need to say that it is definitely more than just a carbon copy of L4D.

Destiny: The Taken King review – Take me now, don’t be gentle

As we have not yet got an official review for Destiny this will count as both a review for Destiny and it’s DLC: The Taken King. Version played: PS4. Destiny is a game which has impressed me, I think that’s safe to say. Released during the Dark Days of 2014, the first full year following the release of the new generation of consoles. It was released during a time when games were being released to try and make use of all the improved hardware of the new generation and everything went badly wrong for everyone, we had the horror of always-online Titanfall (does anyone still play Titanfall incidentally?), we had video gaming’s mostly highly anticipated 7/10 Watch_Dogs and this isn’t even mentioning the shambles of exclusives for the consoles that year Sunset Overdrive (lulsorandum) and Knack (wow, has THAT got shitty reviews). It was during these days of strife and turmoil that Bungie, developers of Halo, said that they were making what was essentially an “FPSMMO” that looked, well, quite a lot like Halo. I will admit right now, I thought it would get reasonable reviews, people would reach max level and then everyone would be over it in a few months.

Wolfenstein: The New Order review – William Blazkowicz did nothing wrong

I remember being very iffy when I heard the announcement for the latest iteration in the Wolfenstein series of games (an announcement which is now lost way back in the mists of time) but a lot of my fears were rather quickly assuaged by the fact that the game would NOT be set during World War 2, like every other Wolfenstein, and also by the trailers which showed an alternate timeline where the Nazi’s won World War 2 and now ruled the world (and indeed everything else as well basically). This alone seemed like a decent selling point as I am new enough to cyberpunk and steampunk that I am not worn out on them yet but it also was rather innovative, in a slightly cheating sort of way.

Star Wars Battlefront Beta impressions- Unimpressive. Most unimpressive.

Over the past few days I spent a little while playing the Beta for the brand new Star Wars Battlefront (on the PS4), a reboot of an older and much-beloved series of games. Battlefront 2 was actually a game I, along with many others, enjoyed immensely and so naturally everyone was very disappointed that LucasArts never really seemed to want to develop another one. Sure every couple of years there would be rumours of another Battlefront in the works, but nothing ever really came to light until Disney bought the rights to Star Wars a couple of years back and instantly EA announced that they would be using one of their many minions (in this case DICE, of Battlefield fame) to make a new Battlefront. Naturally everyone immediately creamed their pants before remembering EA’s track record with things like this but we could only sit patiently and hope for the best.

Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea DLC review – Constants and variables

The following article contains some spoilers for the end of Bioshock Infinite. Bioshock Infinite was unquestionably one of my favourite games of 2013 and remains every bit as excellent. It ought to be a mark of its excellence that I actually played the game through twice despite its linear path and story, simply because I enjoyed playing it so much. Indeed it was only in the past few weeks that I completed my second playthrough on 1999 mode (and got all those collectible achievements along the way, I might add) and decided that I just had not yet had quite my fill of Bioshock. This prompted me to buy the season pass for the game and work through the various DLCs on offer.

Video Mondaily – Hawken First Impressions

Hey, it’s been a while since we did one of these! Don’t worry! We’re still  not ACTUALLY dead. We’re just in the middle of The End Times (capitalization intended and necessary). Winter is Coming, and all that jazz. BUT we’re still playing vidya, just not perhaps with the same frequency as we would at any other time. And, let’s be fair, our posting rate has been utterly abysmal lately. Anyway! Tim recently jumped into the free-to-play Hawken beta by Adhesive Games (which is currently on Steam) against some AI to give a brief first-impressions of a very cool and very polished looking FPS. Video Mondaily – Sir, You Are Being Hunted

  Sir, You Are Being Hunted is a first person shooter set in a randomly generated British-style country full of forests, small villages, roads and all the sort of quintessential “British” rural necessities (or at least I believe that is what they were aiming for). Oh, plus there’s robots. The game is based around an alternate dimension sort-of-thing that the player has been teleported to in which you are the only human and steam-punk robots have taken over and are now trying to relocate your head from your shoulders. Plus they have top-hats, so they can’t be that bad.

Bioshock Infinite review – Part of the Mile High Club!

I was looking forward to Bioshock Infinite since it’s announcement and the début trailer all the way back in 2010. With three years of build-up and hype it wouldn’t be surprising if a lot of people were left disappointed, life and games have a way of doing that to you. This is especially true with Bioshock considering just how good the first two games were (with Bioshock 2 admittedly lacking some of the magic of the first). However, it’s pretty safe to say, judging by the reviews already done of the game, that Infinite has both met and surpassed people’s expectations and I am indeed amongst the ranks of those who absolutely bloody loved the game. It felt new, exciting and awesome and it was still very much Bioshock with all the trappings of gorgeous graphics, intense combat and tense atmosphere that were present in the first. Set approximately 50 years before the previous Bioshocks, Infinite is set in the flying city of Columbia, a theocratic dictatorship underneath the iron fist of the Prophet Zachary Comstock. You play as one Booker DeWitt, previously a US Cavalryman and Pinkerton, and you are sent to Columbia to retrieve and rescue a girl called Elizabeth to “erase the debt”. If you are unsure what any of this means essentially if he was the sort of man to have business cards (which he ISN’T) they would say: “Booker DeWitt P.I. and Certified BADASS”. I went into the game thinking, like the previous instalments, that as soon as Booker set foot in the flying city he would find it a hazardous dystopian world where everything is broken and everyone is messed up. Instead, after arriving through the clouds you arrive in a surprisingly utopian city in which everything appears wonderful and happy. My second expectation, quickly following from the eradication of the first, was that the first hour or so would be a showcase of the city: a near blissful tour where Irrational Games would get to show off their wondrous creation before having things go wrong. Instead, after a short look around (which was indeed pretty blissful and wondrous) you are suddenly thrown head first into the action as things go from good to awful big-time-stylee. So with two of my predictions smashed right off the bat I would say that Bioshock Infinite was already surprising me.
