Destiny: The Taken King review – Take me now, don’t be gentle

As we have not yet got an official review for Destiny this will count as both a review for Destiny and it’s DLC: The Taken King. Version played: PS4. Destiny is a game which has impressed me, I think that’s safe to say. Released during the Dark Days of 2014, the first full year following the release of the new generation of consoles. It was released during a time when games were being released to try and make use of all the improved hardware of the new generation and everything went badly wrong for everyone, we had the horror of always-online Titanfall (does anyone still play Titanfall incidentally?), we had video gaming’s mostly highly anticipated 7/10 Watch_Dogs and this isn’t even mentioning the shambles of exclusives for the consoles that year Sunset Overdrive (lulsorandum) and Knack (wow, has THAT got shitty reviews). It was during these days of strife and turmoil that Bungie, developers of Halo, said that they were making what was essentially an “FPSMMO” that looked, well, quite a lot like Halo. I will admit right now, I thought it would get reasonable reviews, people would reach max level and then everyone would be over it in a few months.

Halo 4 review – What is this feeling? A lack of disappointment?!

For this review I will be casually ignoring one of the things I always say and think about the video game industry. I have said many times that I dislike franchises which rehash the same thing every year in order to squeeze money from fans with only the barest of changes between games and little to no innovation (read “Call of Duty, Mario and FIFA”). It is something which happens far too often in the mainstream gaming industry: a certain series or type of game receives wide acclaim and fandom and all of sudden that’s all the company ever makes. Halo was a series I loved, but honestly I thought that since Halo 3 the games just went downhill, they essentially became more of the same and just started to become disappointing (admittedly I did enjoy Reach). With the fact in mind that Halo is a series which has now become one of those franchises with little new ever happening, I still have to say that I really, REALLY liked Halo 4. Reach was the last installment in the Halo Universe which was created by Bungie. Since they left the game has been taken over by 343 Industries (which is essentially a video game company created by Microsoft for the specific purpose of making more things Halo). 343 have had input on other Halo titles but Halo 4 is the first game they have created on their own. And you know what, it is gooood!

Endweek News – Gods and Kings, Mass Effect 3 gets some delicious DLC, Assassins Creed 3 shenanigans and Relationships are Tricky…

I write this news post in the early hours of the morning as it was meant to be up yesterday. I do promise that I will try and be more punctual about these but the end of lectures and classes at University have put me in a holiday/lazy mood. Which when combined with my inherent laziness is difficult to overcome. However, let’s crack on and do the news from the last couple of days. What is going on in the gaming world?

Midweek News – 0 x 10^c, SimCity, Halo Stats and some Demon Hunting

If you noticed Tim’s post yesterday you’ll know that we’ve been making a few plans to change the way we do things here. Most of it comes down to we will be posting less often but will try and make each post count more. As part of this I won’t be posting News every day now, instead I will be combining all the cool news stories of each week into two separate posts. One on Wednesdays and one on Sundays. The Midweek and the Endweek News posts. This is the first post of that layout, so let’s hope it goes well! As always make sure to comment here or via Twitter or Facebook to let us know of your opinions on the change! So, what’s been in the news since Sunday? Well we’ve got a whole lot of interesting stuff that you can check out after the jump! We’ve got some stats from Bungie about Halo now that they are no longer making the games, gameplay footage of Diablo 3 featuring the Demon Hunter, some game announcements and some trailers. There’s even some stuff about GAME as well!

Halo: The Fallen

Today’s batch of awesome is yet another Halo fan-film. This time centred around some Marines (not even ODSTs) and featuring some rather impressively done Grunts, Jackels, Elites and Hunters it’s yet another nod of the head to the Halo fan community which has never stopped shy of impressing me. Actually the short movie has yet to be released and what I’ve watched was just the prologue. Despite that though, The Fallen is definitely impressive and very cool, despite the meagre budget of $200.

Halo 4 – First Look

343 Industries have released the first batch of gameplay footage and information about Halo 4 the upcoming Halo series featuring the triumphant return of the Master Chief. And guess what Halo fans! That’s not all that will be returning triumphantly! No sir-ee. It would appear that, despite my approval for the DMR (the replacement for the Battle-Rifle in Halo: Reach),  343 Industries have listened to enough complaints and whinging by fans and have put the Battle-Rifle back into Halo 4. So we can expect to, once again, hear that “brakka-brakka” sound that inevitably leads to having your head peppered with a trio of bullets. Which also in turn leads to a bout of swearing and yelling “HOW THE FUCK DID HE DO THAT?!?”

Master Chief new look

Just a quick shout out to you lot that THIS is the new look for Master Chief in Halo 4 this year. Apparently his suit design in the trailer wasn’t final, well these new figurines show off his PROPER new suit design. 343 Industries boss, Frank O’Connor, has previously said that there are reasons for MC’s new suit but they have yet to divulge any of them. Looking goooood though.

Helljumper Episode 1

I forgot to make a news post when the first episode of Helljumper was released for one simple reason. I forgot it was coming out when it did. However, I actually just watched it and enjoyed myself some Halo awesome! You can check out the 13 minute video of awesome after the jump! I’ll also give some of my thoughts on the video (like I’ve been meaning to do for videos/trailers and fan-films).

Helljumper – The Covenant never had it so bad…

Just a brief reminder to everyone about a news post I made before Christmas. The online TV show Helljumper which focuses on the ODST during first contact with the Covenant in the Halo Universe and which looks awesome and amazing will have it’s first episode premiere on the 26th of this month! I thoroughly recommend you remember to check out the official site on that date so you too can enjoy some awesome Halo-ness! The first episode will be around 22 minutes long so it shouldn’t take up too much of your time. Besides why on earth would you want to miss this. Or why in the Universe might be more apt…
