Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice review – You must be mad!

You know what really bothers me about Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice? Something which made me feel really extremely silly and therefore irritated with developers Ninja Theory for making me look and feel silly. Have you heard about the whole controversy that surrounded the game’s save files? The game itself even outright tells you that if you die too often that it would delete your save in a manner of permadeath? I had a big long discussion about this and whether or not I thought it was good game design, whether it was a gimmick or actually could even be construed as a legitimate mechanic. Well it turns out that actually it’s simply not true and doesn’t happen. Yeah, mind blown. Apparently there is no permadeath mechanic. The game doesn’t delete your save file. The rot which creeps up the protagonist’s body to show how often you’ve died actually just always stops at a certain level and never progresses higher. It was all a swindle, a sham, a bald-faced lie.

Syndrome review – Syndrome of a Down.

One of the worst things about becoming at least reasonably clued in to any particular medium is that you begin to recognise the patterns and tropes between titles. No longer do you approach every film/book/game with wide eyed optimism but instead with a leery cynicism as you point out every single thing that has been done previously. Of course, sometimes this sort of thing is just made a bit too easy for you and such is the case with Syndrome, a new indie horror by Camel101 in conjunction with Bigmoon Entertainment (the company behind Lichdom Battlemage).

Among the Sleep review – Baby, baby, baby, AAAARGHH!

 Among the Sleep, by Krillbite studios, is a game which had an exceptional amount of potential for sheer, unbridled terror. By taking the player out of the usual comfort zone of playing as a grown man/woman and putting them into the body of a 2-year old toddler it allowed for the possibility of using all those childhood fears which can be so potent. The teaser for the game, shown back in 2012, certainly had the gaming press all antsy and intrigued for a while, promising a 2013 release date so that people could get their horror fix. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the game’s release was pushed back to 2014 and I think that alone meant that it did not receive as much attention as it could have, because people had simply forgotten about it after the two year wait. So when it did finally release into the world, it was a fairly quiet and unobtrusive.

Five Nights at Freddy’s and Mini Metro – Some Ideas for Your Little Minutes

So you’re busy, you’ve got about an hour before you have to deal with some stuff in the real world. That world into which we rarely venture. I understand that some people, for bizarre reasons, don’t have the time to sit down and play six straight hours of Skyrim or Mass Effect 3 and so while I do not understand I suppose I should take pity on them and offer them some solace. Thus here comes the next article in our series of Some Ideas for Your Little Minutes. These articles will be of games (or perhaps betas of games) that we can’t rightfully give full reviews, because we don’t classify them as full games. But importantly these games will not be something you need to sit down and focus on for hours on end!

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs review – What does the pig say?

This is the part where I usually give credit to the developers of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and I had always planned to say “developed by Frictional Games in concert with The Chinese Room”. But you know what, I no longer know what I do and do not know any more considering that Wikipedia (the source of all knowledge, I’m sure you’ll agree) informs me that the sequel to the critically acclaimed and utterly horrifying Amnesia: The Dark Descent was developed by The Chinese Room and merely published by Frictional Games. Normally I’d assume I’m right, but disagreeing with Wikipedia seems to border on blasphemy so I’ll leave it up to you to figure out what the score is.

Dead Space 3 review – Dead… SPAAAAAAACE!

This is an article I was putting off for a while because I was struggling to get to a stage where I felt I had done “enough” to produce a review. The definition of “enough” varies from game to game from simply putting in a certain number of hours to actually completing the game depending on how much I am enjoying the game. The point comes down to the fact that I always try to give every game I play a fair shot and to not dismiss them out of hand. However, sometimes it becomes increasingly difficult to reach that moment of “right I’ve played enough now!” With Dead Space 3 I went through some serious pains in order to give it what I felt was a “fair shot”, and it was only when I realised that I was actually going through “pains” in order to play it that I decided that life was too short and stopped a good few chapters before the end.

Video Mondaily – The Forest Begins

“The Forest is an open world survival horror game currently in development for PC. Build, explore, survive in this terrifying first person survival horror simulator.” At least, that’s the tagline for The Forest by Endnight Games. What they weren’t counting on apparently was Tim being an absolute bad-ass and totally destroying the horrifying and evil denizens of the game. It’s hilarious, it’s awesome and it shows off an alpha version of a game which looks like it has a tonne of potential to be both amazing and properly scary. Check it out after the jump!

Video Mondaily – Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is here!

In case you were living in a cave or a hole somewhere I should inform you now that the incredibly hyped and highly sought after sequel to Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent was released just under a week ago around the world and has been providing scares and screams to many already. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is wifely considered to be one of (if not The) scariest horror games ever created and so the hype for the sequel was really rather massive, his same hype was compounded when it was revealed that Frictional Games would be working with The Chinese Room to make Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (a company probably best known for the remake of Dear Esther). Well, I have succeeded in getting my hands on A Machine for Pigs, and as me and Tim made a Playthrough of the original it only seemed logical and reasonable that I make a full Playthrough/Walkthrough of it’s successor. The first episode was released early last week with episode 2 being released today and I will post both of them here after the jump! I will be continuing to post episodes as fast as I can throw them together and I hope you enjoy watching me get the shit scared out of my bum because I do believe that might be what will be occurring!

The Walking Dead review – I hate and love you so much…

Before we begin the review proper I would like to share with you a brief e-mail message I am deeply considering sending to Telltale games. It goes as follows *ahem*: Dear Telltale Games, Screw you guys. I hate you. Well, I also love you… But NEVER MIND THAT! You have done two things for which I will be complaining about to you right now! First, you have placed me in an awkward position regarding a review I wrote less than a month ago! Some things I wrote have proved incorrect and now I am feeling both irritated and foolish. I hope you’re pleased with yourself… Secondly, and more importantly! I believe your game “The Walking Dead” is a example of some form of the cruellest and most horrible psychological warfare in the brief existence of our species. I will see you in some European High Court! Good DAY to you sirs! S117 P.s. I still love you though.
