Stellaris review – *Imperial March plays distantly*

“May Terra guide you Admiral Wei, treat those Raltek’s to the indomitable might of a Human Imperial fleet!” my voice is clear over the interstellar radio, carrying all the way from Earth, the cradle of our civilisation, to the distant fleet of Terra’s Fury. Half a dozen cruisers, 20 destroyers and the same and a half again of corvettes, it is the greatest fleet we had been able to marshal to date. Moments ago, we sent a communique to the Raltek’s, a mammalian civilisation neighbouring ours in the Galaxy, declaring full-out war. Their borders had been pressed against ours for decades and recently our peaceful, if wary, understanding had descended into rivalry. The United Nations of Earth may be understanding and accepting of other alien races, but we have learned through centuries that in war sometimes it is better to strike first.

Neptune’s Pride 2 Journal (Part 4 of 4) – The Docco Swarm

Early in 2013 me and my friends played a closed game of Neptune’s Pride 2: Triton, before even the glorious saga that was the war of the Space Bears. During the surprisingly brief, two-week-long, game I once again kept a journal of the exploits of my Empire in a rise and fall of epic proportions. Despite it now being two years later, I kept all my materials and have finally decided that the time is ripe to post the story. This journal log is the final part of four, but you can read the previous entries here, here and here

The Space Bears Neptune’s Pride 2 diary – Days 4 to 7 – The Drums of War Thunder…

A close friend of mine became rather addicted to Neptune’s Pride 2: Triton in the early months of this year, after I introduced it to him. Part of his addiction has led to the playing of many games, far more than I’ve ever played, and in his time he even managed to secure a place in the group stages of the Neptune’s Pride 2 World Championship back in July (3 games of 6 people). Due to the importance of the game to himself and to the community of Neptune’s Pride, I persuaded Sam to keep a log of the major events and he went a step further to keep a detailed and entertaining diary. I will post the diary in short segments for you reading pleasure! Here are the previous entries: Days 1-3.

FTL review – Playing as part of the Empire has never felt better

FTL is one of the poster-boys for Kickstarter campaigns. It’s the heart-warming and fun-filled story of how two men, Matthew Davis and Justin Ma (and their company Subset Games), were making a video game and turned to the gaming community for aid in their time of need. Because the gaming community was their only hope. And things went decidedly well for them as people threw money at their computers hard enough that they managed to raise over $200,000 for development of the game. And the success didn’t stop there either, because after they finished development and released it out into the wild it got positive reviews and responses all across and board and currently has sales figures somewhere above 500k. In short, it is the perfect example of why Kickstarter is used by so many hopeful indie games companies today and why so many of those might actually let people down. “What?! But it’s an indie Kickstarter project! Why is it not good?”

StarMade Preview – SPAAAAAACE!!

Ah.  It’s good to be back in the saddle and today I bring news of my week playing the Steam Greenlight hopeful StarMade.  “But what IS StarMade?  Can I spread it on my toast?” you may ask in a curiously attractive, yet nasal voice.  Well, beautiful internet person, let me tell (and show) you all about it after the obligatory bump.

The Neptune’s Pride Diary of His Royal Highness, Emperor of the Ileryu (a.k.a. Sabor117) – Parts 4 to 8

Click here for Parts 1 to 3 and for Elephant_God’s account of the early game His Royal Highness, Emperor of the Ileryu – Journal Entry 4 21/01/20012 Log Starts – What are they doing? I simply do NOT understand it. The Green has built up an army capable of smashing my Empire into pieces and assembled it right on my border. And then they stopped doing anything. The Reds are pushing into the Yellow Empire slowly but inexorably, as he and I did with the Teal. Speaking of Teal, I ought to say how that is going. Teal marshalled his last fleet on one of his last four planets. The only one within reach to me and Yellow. I had recalled all my strongest fleets to my border with Green and so only had one weak one. Yellow had a stronger one but it possibly wouldn’t have been able to win the fight as Teal had a reasonable amount of ships in his fleet.

The Neptune’s Pride Diary of Sabor117 – Parts 1 to 3 and that of Elephant_God’s

His Royal Highness, Emperor of the Ileryu – Journal Entry 1 Stardate 9/1/20012 Log starts – Our great Empire has come to the sudden realisation that we are not alone in this Galaxy of ours. In fact we share it with another seven space-faring civilisations all in a similar position as us. Meaning they are just starting to expand the borders of their domain. We are in an interesting position which could be considered either strong or weak depending on how you view it. We are at the edges of the Galaxy and as such are not so unfortunate as some in that we are not surrounded by the other civilisations. That said we are within reasonable distance of two space-faring civilisations and only a little further away from a third.

Mass Effect 3 review – I’m Commander Sabor117 and this is the best review on the internet

I find myself in the awkward situation of having to look back at my review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and say “Welp! Taking your title away from you!” I genuinely thought that Skyrim would remain my favourite game for a good few years before something truly epic knocked it from that coveted top spot. Unfortunately for it, after a few months of enjoying it’s position as top dog, Skyrim has had to take a back seat (for me at least) behind the game of truly epic proportions: Mass Effect 3. It is fair enough to say that it is one of the best games of all time (even if you disagree with it being “the best”) as it has been praised and accoladed by fans and critics alike.

Midweek News – 0 x 10^c, SimCity, Halo Stats and some Demon Hunting

If you noticed Tim’s post yesterday you’ll know that we’ve been making a few plans to change the way we do things here. Most of it comes down to we will be posting less often but will try and make each post count more.
