Telltale’s Batman review – I’m the gosh-darned Batman!

As always, I waited until the final episode of Telltale’s Batman was released before playing the series (more-or-less) straight through. It used to be the case that my intro when writing about a Telltale game would be a fairly boring affair (and indeed much of the review would be as well) as my praise for the game they produced tended to almost be as formulaic as the games themselves. Lately though, Telltale has been fairly prolific, with essentially two major series released every year for at least the last three years in a row. However, perhaps as a by-product of this increased output, there has been a rather significant drop in the quality of the games produced over that time. Other than their flagship Walking Dead series I have had mixed feelings towards their different titles, from definite enjoyment of the Wolf Among Us and Tales from the Borderlands to outright loathing of Minecraft: Story Mode.

Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt review – Triss and Yen have competition…

Honestly I kind of spaffed my load early when it comes to what I think about the Witcher 3. I said it in our 2015 Gaming Awards but I’ll go ahead and say it again now. The Witcher 3 is not just mine and Tim’s Game of the Year for 2015, but quite honestly I do see it as being my absolute favourite game of all time and very likely the outright best made to date. It is absolutely an instant classic, damn near perfect in every way that counts and I don’t see anything knocking it from the top spot of my list for years to come. That is an exceptionally strong claim to be making right at the start of this review, but I did want to clarify that so that if I spend the next 3000+ words ranting and raving about just how damned good it is, you knew what you were getting into when you started reading after the jump.

Minecraft Story Mode review – Telling tales about Telltale

So, a Telltale Game… Excellent! I get to tell you that Telltale have made another game along the formula of “a point-and-click, character-based, interactive-story with rapid decisions made during dialogue, minor puzzle-solving, and several major decisions made over the course of the game which will have supposedly far-reaching consequences within the scope of the game?” *Gasping inhale* I get to repeat all of that, tell you my few niggles about the game and then recommend it to you… Again… EXCEPT this isn’t the case. While the game does stick to the forumla, I can rather gleefully inform you that Minecraft Story Mode, is utterly fucking DREADFUL! Oooh, I’ve been looking forward to this happening!

Life is Strange review – “Hella” ain’t no place I ever heard of

Say “hella” again. I dare you, I double-dare you motherfucker say “hella” one more, goddamned time. Okay, now that’s out of the way… I assume people by now are aware of “The Telltale Game”? You know: a point-and-click, character-based, interactive-story with rapid decisions made during dialogue, minor puzzle-solving, and several major decisions made over the course of the game which will have far-reaching consequences in the scope of the game? *Gasping inhale* The sort of game which I have heard, in my opinion slightly unfairly, termed as interactive films, rather than games. Well, Life is Strange is a new Telltale game, by DontNod entertainment and NOT by Telltale surprisingly… This is indeed a most disturbing universe…

Tales from the Borderlands review – 870 gazillion less guns

As I stated last year, when I had finished reviewing The Wolf Among Us and the second season of The Walking Dead, I refuse to play and thus review any of Telltale’s games until they are actually FINISHED, with every episode released. So, if you are wondering why the heck this is the first you are hearing of Tales from the Borderlands from me, when perhaps I ought to have been raving about it last year at some point, then that should fill you in. Now that’s out of the way I can actually tell you that I have now, at long last, played the game and formulated some opinions on it.

The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings review – Because “Monster Hunter” was already taken

The Witcher, by CD Projekt Red, is probably the slightly nerdy and unsociable kid in the school of Western RPGs. While games like Skyrim might be the friendly jock, who everyone likes and is easily accessible, The Witcher is a series that is less well known, less popular, but is every bit as good (better in some ways, worse in others) if one takes the time to get to know it. Sticking with the school metaphor for now as well, it is also a game that feels a little bit more aimed at a specialist crowd rather than at a wide market (and I never really thought I would say Skyrim is supposed to be aimed at a broad market, but in comparison it is). Or maybe that’s just what we like to tell ourselves after we’ve finished it, in the same way that people who have completed Dark Souls like to go up to those who haven’t and act painfully smug about how easy they found it.

Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea DLC review – Constants and variables

The following article contains some spoilers for the end of Bioshock Infinite. Bioshock Infinite was unquestionably one of my favourite games of 2013 and remains every bit as excellent. It ought to be a mark of its excellence that I actually played the game through twice despite its linear path and story, simply because I enjoyed playing it so much. Indeed it was only in the past few weeks that I completed my second playthrough on 1999 mode (and got all those collectible achievements along the way, I might add) and decided that I just had not yet had quite my fill of Bioshock. This prompted me to buy the season pass for the game and work through the various DLCs on offer.

The Wolf Among Us review – I’ll huff and I’ll puff

When it comes to writing reviews for an episodic game I learned my lesson from my attempt to review each individual episode of The Raven, despite differences in each episode, at the end of the day you do just end up saying the same thing about each episode. It made my vocabulary feel a lot more limited than it already is. That’s why after writing my first impressions, way back when the first episode was released, I have gone completely silent on my progress of The Wolf Among Us by Telltale Games. However, my lack of reporting on my progress should not be mistaken for a lack of progress, for I have indeed recently finished the game’s final episode and am now finally ready to provide my thoughts on the game as a whole.

Monochroma review – 50 Shades of Grey with a bit of red

Monochroma is the first title by Istanbul-based Nowhere Studios (thanks Wikipedia!) and despite it’s humble origins, the developers had some fairly lofty goals for the game. On the Steam page, one of the early bug updates says that they (Nowhere) want Monochroma to be considered as one of the best platformers of all time. Meanwhile on their official website they are no less reserved as they describe their game as a “deeply visual, intellectual and emotional experience”. So if it sounds to you like these guys are aiming high, then you would definitely be very right about that. Whether they’ve succeeded is, of course, an entirely different matter.

Jade Empire Retrospectacle – MAI HONOURS!

It’s funny the things that the brain remembers given the correct prompting. Prior to my recent playthrough of the game I only remembered three things about Jade Empire, an RPG by Bioware released way back in 2005 (before Bioware was known for Bioware RPGs). I, even then, remembered hearing literally nothing about it prior to getting it as a present for something or other.  I also remember though how much I enjoyed the game, it’s colourful world, it’s characters and it’s choices. I also remember Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard… Cause that guy was an absolute fucking hero… Even if he hadn’t been voiced by John Cleese!
