Early Access Evolution: Folk Tale

    We at MMGaming love early access games. It gives us a good taste of what fun feature complete games to expect in the future and the added bonus of (hopefully) being fun while still in early access. So what happens to all those games that we tried out in early access years ago? The ones that may have been popular for a time on their early access release but have gone under the radar since then? Let’s see where some of these games are now… Starting with Folk Tale!

Stellaris review – *Imperial March plays distantly*

“May Terra guide you Admiral Wei, treat those Raltek’s to the indomitable might of a Human Imperial fleet!” my voice is clear over the interstellar radio, carrying all the way from Earth, the cradle of our civilisation, to the distant fleet of Terra’s Fury. Half a dozen cruisers, 20 destroyers and the same and a half again of corvettes, it is the greatest fleet we had been able to marshal to date. Moments ago, we sent a communique to the Raltek’s, a mammalian civilisation neighbouring ours in the Galaxy, declaring full-out war. Their borders had been pressed against ours for decades and recently our peaceful, if wary, understanding had descended into rivalry. The United Nations of Earth may be understanding and accepting of other alien races, but we have learned through centuries that in war sometimes it is better to strike first.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada review – You make me mada… but in a good way.

    Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is the newest game capatlising on the long running franchise of Warhammer 40k. Warhammer titles have always been a hit and miss afair, luckily Battlefleet Gothic is a critical hit with all broadside macro-cannons although it’s not without its’ flaws. I have always been mildly interested in the Warhammer 40k universe but my interest has never reached beyond that. Dawn of war and Dawn of war 2 were great games but that was in spite of it’s Warhammer 40k theme, not because of it. I’m told that Battlefleet is very true to the lore but frankly I couldn’t care less and for a very simple reason. Space ships shooting the shit out of each other is cool. It is very, very cool.

Video Mondaily – Tim and Seb Play Rome 2

As will hopefully become more and more clear over the coming year, I have a new computer, and this has sort of breathed a new lease of life into MMGaming. We are making plans, making videos, starting to stream with increasing regularity (both on Twitch and on Youtube) and, most importantly we are playing more games. Well, that latter may not be true for Tim, but it is certainly true for me! As I now have a computer which can actually run games properly I am determined to make the most of it and one of the things which I was quick to jump into was Rome 2, a game I was gifted on release but which could not run on my old laptop. Well, fear not folks, because after a long wait I have finally started my campaign, and have also started a multiplayer one with Tim as well! Check after the jump!

Neptune’s Pride 2 Journal (Part 3 of 4) – The Triforce War

Early in 2013 me and my friends played a closed game of Neptune’s Pride 2: Triton, before even the glorious saga that was the war of the Space Bears. During the surprisingly brief, two-week-long, game I once again kept a journal of the exploits of my Empire in a rise and fall of epic proportions. Despite it now being two years later, I kept all my materials and have finally decided that the time is ripe to post the story. Xenonauts review – Certainty of death, small chance of success, what are we waiting for?

Xenonauts by Goldhawk Interactive is billed as the “spiritual successor” for UFO: Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM: UFO Defense from the early 90’s (thanks Wikipedia!). I.e. back in the day when I was more concerned with learning how to walk and breath simultaneously instead of complex and novel turn-based strategy. X-COM is a turn-based strategy game which was, apparently, a commercial and critical success but honestly I had not heard of it until a few years ago when 2K Interactive rebooted the series with X-COM: Enemy Unknown (taking the best parts of both names and mashing them together to make a new one it would seem). This is also not to be confused with The Bureau: XCOM Declassified which was a 3rd person shooter which was about as successful as warm milk on a hot Summer’s afternoon.

Cities in Motion 2 review – Also known as “Throwing Trams at the City Until it Works… 2”

Cities in Motion 2 is one of several Paradox Interactive releases from last year which slipped through the cracks at MMGaming. I have to admit to being intrigued by the title and looking it up, because I was hoping I would see a sort Predator Cities style game, with gigantic moving cities which eat each other. Or at least something with moving cities, because I have to admit that I used to be quite the fan of Predator Cities. Although… I disliked the way it ended, but I digress. However, the few bits of cover art and screenshots I saw all pictured trains and the like, and because I instantly assumed it was some form of Train Simulator, I decided to ignore it. Well look at all this egg that is currently residing on my face right now and I have to admit to be tucking into a slice of humble pie (only a slice of course, humility is fattening) in that having recently downloaded and spent some time playing Cities in Motion 2 that I actually really quite enjoy it!

A Game of Thrones in Crusader Kings 2 (Part 1) – A United Scotland

Crusader Kings 2 by Paradox Interactive is a game which has slowly been growing on me over recent months. Since I wrote the official MMGaming review of the game I have been picking it back up again every now and again and continuing a dynasty I started months ago. As I now am nearing the passing of the 200th in-game year I have had some cause to reflect on my dynasty and the success it has had, and I have come to the decision that it is a story I would like to share, because my noble house has indeed had great success. This is not a review or anything of the sort about CK2 but is simply a tale of how a noble house in Scotland has come to rule one of the most powerful nations in the entire world. It should be noted that most of this story is told from memory, so unfortunately there are no screenshots of most of my progress through the game. I also will be talking about my progress in a way that might not always make sense to someone who hasn’t played CK2, but for the most part I hope it will be easy to follow.
