Mass Effect Andromeda review – Jesus Christ Ryder, they’re MINERALS!

Mass Effect™: Andromeda_20170314142145There have been few moments in the past year or so in which I have woken up to a feeling of abject horror and despair, you know that feeling which overwhelmed you when you heard Trump was President? For me, it was upon hearing of the controversy surrounding Mass Effect Andromeda, with early previews and subsequent reviews not outright hating the game but still definitively unimpressed.

I say this so that I can admit to some potential bias in the review because Mass Effect 1 through 3 currently hold a place in my heart as my favourite video game series (if not the actual best games). Continue reading

Dragon Age: Origins retrospectacle – Grey Wardens and grey environments

Dragon Age Origins wallpaperOne of the downsides of having only recently (within the last year really) joined the PC master race is that I suddenly find I no longer have any excuse to avoid many of the games I wistfully daydreamed about for so long when I couldn’t run any of them. Pretty high on the list of games I was disappointed to miss out on at their release, and always told myself I would play it if I ever got the chance to, is Dragon Age: Inquisition. DA:I was Tim’s game of the year for 2014 (which, while admittedly not a great year for games, is a pretty glowing recommendation on its own) but I have never been one for jumping into series halfway through… So one of the things I was determined to do was to actually complete Dragon Age: Origins first. The first installment of the popular series, released all the way back in 2009.

The MMGaming Awards – 2015

Can you feel the anticipation in the air? The excitement? That general tension and jostling for position and prestige which comes along with the Annual MMGaming Awards. Arguably the most prestigious award scheme in existence (because nobody else quite gets it right half the time). As before this post is liable to be a bit late but I personally have always thought it makes more sense to actually post it after the year is over, to give everyone a fair chance. Also, admittedly last year we did not provide an Awards post (and we received several angry letters from EA who thought they had it in the bag for Dragon Age: Inquisition) but this was actually primarily due to my own reluctance to write an awards post for a year in which I had played practically none of the big releases. At the time this was due to my lack of a machine which could play any of the newest games, however, now with a new gaming rig AND a PS4 I suddenly find myself in a position where I can once again start to know what I am talking about.

So while 2014 was a bust, let us speak of it no further and immediately dive into the MMGaming Awards for 2015!

Jade Empire Retrospectacle – MAI HONOURS!

Jade Empire wallpaper

It’s funny the things that the brain remembers given the correct prompting. Prior to my recent playthrough of the game I only remembered three things about Jade Empire, an RPG by Bioware released way back in 2005 (before Bioware was known for Bioware RPGs). I, even then, remembered hearing literally nothing about it prior to getting it as a present for something or other.  I also remember though how much I enjoyed the game, it’s colourful world, it’s characters and it’s choices. I also remember Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard… Cause that guy was an absolute fucking hero… Even if he hadn’t been voiced by John Cleese! Continue reading

Endweek News – Seb’s Top Five

Welcome folks, welcome to the Endweek News! This is your weekly segment of SOME things gaming. I say “some” things because, frankly, I have neither the time nor the botheredness to actually post everything of gaming related interest every week and so I will be trimming off the fat and the sliiiightly less interesting stories in favour of the Top Five stories of the week! Welcome to the Endweek News – Seb’s Top Five!

So I was ill over the weekend and am only just now putting the finishing touches on this and posting it… Trust me when I say other than a few little things this was ready to be posted on Sunday. Apologies for the poor start. Continue reading

Why the Mass Effect 3 Extended Ending removes the bullshit…

A while ago I wrote a pretty long rant explaining my absolute dislike and hatred of the ending of Mass Effect 3 (confirming the general public opinion of it), before I start writing here I feel obliged to inform you that this article will be very spoiler heavy as I will be walking you through the major changes and if you have yet to play through Mass Effect 3 with or without the Extended Cut ending and don’t wish to have anything ruined for you then you should avoid clicking on the “Continue Reading” button.

It is fairly common knowledge amongst gamers now, even if you’ve never looked sideways at a Mass Effect game, that in the final instalment of their trilogy Bioware messed up on the ending and upset a lot of people, me among them. Bioware, in light of the public opinion quickly announced that they would be releasing a free Extended Cut for the ending which would add new dialogue and cut scenes which would explain the numerous plot holes and hopefully change the ending into something people approved of. Tim continues to believe that this was all planned out in almost a publicity stunt while I continue to hope that Bioware listened to the fans and decided to change their game to better please them… Who knows…

Anyway, the Extended Cut was released at the end of June/beginning of July across all platforms and as soon as I was able to dove right back into my favourite game for my second playthrough. Due to a combination of laziness, playing other games, being ridiculously thorough (as always), and playing on the Insane difficulty I have only recently finished my second playthrough and am ready to give my opinion.

Endweek News – Diablo patches, Updates and Release Dates and not really very much happening

It is unfortunate that I left at the most inopportune moment for a holiday… I left two weeks ago right in the middle of E3 and thus I missed out on most of what was going on AND I wasn’t able to post anything about it. I mean I also wasn’t here for last week’s news but that seems less important in comparison to learning about E3. However I am back now and I will once again dispense wisdom and knowledge to the masses every Sunday (or thereabouts) in the form of news of the world of video games! I might even summon the courage to look back a couple of weeks and sift through all the various updates and exciting things from E3 to give you our own highlights of this years expo… But that is just as possible to not happen, we will have to wait and see.

It’s an interesting point as well that with the massive frenzy of news that was E3 the video game world has quietened down a little bit recently as they try and take a few deep breaths to steady themselves. I can understand really, the build-up to E3 followed by the massive out-pouring of news… Well I’m surprised there’s really any news at all already! But let’s see what’s been going on shall we?
