Lords of the Black Sun review – Civilisation in SPAAAAAACE!

Lords of the Black Sun artwork Frankly it’s about time that someone made a strategy game in space, one where you can control vast fleets of starships and conquer a vast array of systems and planets. A game where you can fight an array of alien species whilst researching the next scientific innovation which will allow you to improve your terraforming of planets or improve your current colonies or nuke somebody else’s planets. Unfortunately, while Lords of the Black Sun by  Arkavi Studios does indeed contain all of these things, it doesn’t really do it in the way I see it in my mind. It’s a game which, I think, had noble intentions but then, rather unfortunately, failed to deliver on pretty much all of them.

Why Wildstar?

If you’ve read the start of my recent Retrospectacle on World of Warcraft then you might understand that both Tim and I were big time fans of Blizzard’s MMO. We loved that game and everything about it and both of us, at one point or another, reached the end-game raiding content (even getting quite far at times). Both of us also quit for similar reasons, and none of those reasons were that we were fed up of the game. The simple fact was that it devoured our life, free time and money (money which we could not spare at Uni) and so we quit (him a good two years before me). Continue reading

A close friend of mine became rather addicted to Neptune’s Pride 2: Triton in the early months of this year, after I introduced it to him. Part of his addiction has led to the playing of many games, far more than I’ve ever played, and in his time he even managed to secure a place in the group stages of the Neptune’s Pride 2 World Championship back in July (3 games of 6 people). Due to the importance of the game to himself and to the community of Neptune’s Pride, I persuaded Sam to keep a log of the major events and he went a step further to keep a detailed and entertaining diary. FTL review – Playing as part of the Empire has never felt better

FTL is one of the poster-boys for Kickstarter campaigns. It’s the heart-warming and fun-filled story of how two men, Matthew Davis and Justin Ma (and their company Subset Games), were making a video game and turned to the gaming community for aid in their time of need. Because the gaming community was their only hope. And things went decidedly well for them as people threw money at their computers hard enough that they managed to raise over $200,000 for development of the game.

And the success didn’t stop there either, because after they finished development and released it out into the wild it got positive reviews and responses all across and board and currently has sales figures somewhere above 500k. In short, it is the perfect example of why Kickstarter is used by so many hopeful indie games companies today and why so many of those might actually let people down. “What?!
