Today Microsoft celebrate the 10th birthday of the release of the XBox in Europe. As I understand the American birthday was sometime last November. This celebrates the launch of the original big black XBox on the 15th of November in North America and the 14th of March in Europe.
If you head on over to the official Microsoft XBox website, Microsoft have constructed a timeline from all the way back in the year 2000 when the XBox was officially announced.
Now, 12 years after the announcement 108 million XBox and Xbox 360s have been sold. The XBox live community is over 40 million strong. And, even more amazingly, the combined gamer-score of all those gamers? Well over 196 BILLION gamer points!
It’s been an amazing journey really. I remember getting both my XBox and my XBox 360. I also remember playing Halo on the former and Halo 3 on the latter. Those were the games those consoles were BUILT for.
Now we are slowly building up to the release of Halo 4, Mass Effect 3 came out a few days ago and we’ve pretty much reached the limit of what these fantastic machines can offer us as they simply can’t handle the graphics and scale of games like Skyrim.
Soon we may be entering another chapter of the XBox with the hopeful announcement of the 720 at E3 this year. If you ask me, things can only keep going up from here!
Are there any moments in the history of these consoles you particularly remember? Why not tell us in the comments or on our Facebook or Twitter?
